                                                   History
On December 10,1856.the first oil lamp was lit at the Crescent City Light Station, know as
Battery Point Lighthouse. In the tower, now is a Fourth Order Frensel Lens operated by
electricity.  During its more than 100 year History, many keepers and their families have
come and gone.Operation of the lighthouse has changed hands from the US Lighthouse
Service,to the US Coast Guard. to finally the Historical Society which maintains it today.
Stories are many over the years.
There is a resident ghost. Many weddings have taken
place on the island. Then scenic beauty has attracted some film companies, commercials
and music videos. During the tidal wave of 1964, the keepers were stranded on the island.
No damage was done to the island, but they watched the waves hit the mainland.
